Description
This is a reproduction of Titian’s “Tribute Money” of about 1654. The subject of this painting is taken from the New Testament. The Pharisees ask Peter whether his master pays tax to the Romans. Christ sends Peter to the nearby sea to fetch the tribute money from the mouth of a fish.. Tiziano Vecelli was born in about 1490 in Pieve di Cadore within the Republic of Venice. When he was twelve he was sent to an uncle who arranged for him to enter an apprenticeship with the Gellini brothers. He gained in reputation as a late teen becoming a leader in the school of the “arte moderna”. He painted a fresco in 1511 Padua and in 1513 secured a public commission to complete paintings begun by Giovanni Bellini and by 1516 he held a government contract. Remarkably, for the next sixty years Titian, as he was known, was the unrivaled leader of the Venetian School of Painting. He executed many portraits and for the last twenty-five years of his life worked mainly for Philip II of Spain. He died in Venice on August 27, 1576.
