Description
Exceptional ink-and-oil painting by Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617), dating from 1600-1603, depicting a theme from classical mythology. The source of illumination in the painting - Cupid's torch - rouses Venus from her slumber. Two satyrs offer her grapes and other fruits, signifying that without food and wine, love cannot flourish, an ancient Roman theme that was popular in Holland in the late seventeenth century, and quite possibly still is.
